Part 1: Using the Sustainability Planning Toolkit

This webinar provided an overview of the sustainability planning process and a discussion of how the Five Milestones for Sustainability integrate with ICLEI’s STAR Community Index. It also discussed keys for a successful sustainability planning process, tips for each step along the way, and an overview of the resources in the Toolkit to help you get started.

The presentation described the innovative development of PlaNYC and how you can replicate this process. It also covered the City's implementation progress, three years after the plan's release, and gave highlights from a selection of the 127 initiatives in the plan and an update on the planning process for PlaNYC 2, due to be released on Earth Day 2011.

This webinar reviews the progress of each local government’s sustainability planning process and how you can take the lessons learned from their experiences to apply to your own sustainability planning efforts. Speakers include:
- Mayor Noam Bramson, New Rochelle, NY
- Chelsea Albucher, Sustainability Coordinator, Newark, NJ
- Amy Knowles, Organizational Development Administrator, Miami-Dade County

ICLEI staff engaged in the development of the STAR Community Index discussed progress over the past year to develop a national sustainability performance system for U.S. communities. The STAR framework features goals and measures across the three pillars of sustainability: environment, economy and equity.
The webinar introduced the first draft of the comprehensive set of goals that comprise the STAR framework; it described the basis for the stakeholder process, detailed the challenges and themes that have arisen, and discussed the implicit social change model that the program represents.
