Frequently Asked Questions About Version 3.0

When should I use the 3.0 patch instead of the 3.0 new installation?

If you are a first time user and have never used any version of CACP 2009, you should download the full installation of CACP 2009 3.0.  If you currently have data in either CACP 2009 Version 2.0, 2.1, 2.2, 2.2.1 or 2.2.1b and do not want to re-enter your data, you should download the CACP 2009 version 3.0 Patch.  This will update your current version of CACP 2009.

Note: If you are a user of v2.2 or v2.2.1 it is important that you download the v3.0 Patch. This Patch will fix an error found when moving between inventory years in versions 2.2 and 2.2.1.

Will running the Patch cause me to lose data?

No, running the CACP 2009 Version 3.0 patch will not cause you to lose data.  However, it is always a good idea to backup your data before making any significant changes to your software.

***Note: Some Indicators in CACP 2009 v3.0 have changed from v2.2.1b. When you install the Patch, some indicators field names will automatically update and cause users to have to manually update their indicators. For a comprehensive list of these changes, see the CACP 2009 v3.0 Data Entry Instructions.

Will custom emission factors from 2.2.1b be saved with the v3.0 Patch or if I restore a saved backup?

Yes. The system automatically updates factors and will perform a “Recalculate All” upon restore. It is good practice to manually “Recalculate All” after updating or restoring even though the software will automatically do this.

Will I get all the CACP 2009 v3.0 updates if use the patch instead of the new installation?

Yes, users who install the patch will get all updates from the new installation.

How do I know which version of CACP 2009 I am running?

  • If you downloaded CACP 2009 between April 16, 2009 and June 8, 2009, and have not installed the 2.1 patch, you are using CACP 2.0.
  • If you downloaded CACP 2009 between June 9, 2009 and January 5, 2010, you are using CACP 2009 version 2.1.
  • CACP 2009 Version 2.2 was first released on January 6, 2010 (if you downloaded the software between 1/6/2010 and 1/11/2010, please note that there was an additional fix released during this time).
Copies of CACP 2009 version 2.2 prominently display “Version 2.2” in the top blue bar once you have opened the software.
  • If you downloaded CACP 2009 between February 27, 2010 and April 11, 2010 you are using Version 2.2.1.
  • If you downloaded CACP 2009 between April 12, 2010 and May 24, 2011 you are using Version 2.2.1b.
  • For Version 3.0, the top blue bar of the software will display “Version 3.0”.

Can I upload a data backup from previous versions of CACP 2009 into CACP 2009 v3.0?

Yes.

Can I upload a data backup from CACPS (released in 2003 and updated in 2005) into CACP 2009 v3.0?

Unfortunately, no. Please check back soon for guidance on how to go about doing this process.

Will there still be a web-based User Guide for CACP 2009 v3.0?

No. Due to the demand for a downloadable version of the User Guide, the CACP 2009 v3.0 User Guide will be broken up into pieces relating to Installation, Data Entry and Reporting instructions. The Installation instruction will be online but other guidance documents will now be in PDF format and available for download in the Climate Mitigation Guidance section of ICLEI USA's website.

Improvements and Updates to
CACP 2009 Version 3.0

Simplified Data Entry

  • You can now use the Data Import Form contained in the Master Data Workbook to import (copy and paste) data into CACP 2009 from Excel for stationary sources.
  • New easy way to tag a record according the LGO Protocol reporting sub-categories (see chapter 13 of the LGO Protocol) using a drop down menu in the Categories function of CACP 2009.

Improved Data Organization using Scopes

  • You can now use check boxes on the record screens to tell CACP 2009 if a record is an Information Item or Scope 3 source. In some cases like the CO2 from biofuels and in the Scope 3 Waste tab, records are automatically labeled as such.
  • The software will now automatically assign most fuel consumption as Scope 1 unless Scope 3 or Information Item boxes are checked.
  • The software will now automatically assign all electricity consumption as Scope 2 unless Scope 3 or Information Item boxes are checked.
  • The software will now automatically assign biogenic CO2 from biofuels as an Information Item and label it as “BioCO2”.
  • Biogenic CO2 (BioCO2) is now displayed at the bottom of each record screen. Like other summary fields at the bottom of the screen, the BioCO2 field sums your biogenic CO2 emissions as you go for each record.
  • The definition of some indicator fields have been changed in v3.0. For example, what was previously the indicator called “Output” in the Wastewater Facilities sector is now more specific “Output Treated (1,000 gallons wastewater treated)”. In this case, any previous indicator data would overestimate output by a factor of 1,000. These definition changes have occurred for only a few indicators, please see the CACP 2009 Data Entry Instructions for more on how these changes will affect your indicator data.
  • We have added indicators in numerous sectors to increase your options when reporting.

New Calculators

  • You can now follow LGO Protocol methods for calculating CO2 separately from N2O and CH4 in the transportation sectors of CACP 2009 using new customized coefficient sets.
  • We added a Scope 3 Waste calculator to the Government Operations Module – now you can calculate waste disposed in both the Community and Government Analysis Modules.

Indicators / Reporting / Exporting

  • You can now select whether or not reports include or exclude Scope 1, 2 or 3 sources. Each report will list which scopes have been included.
  • You can now run almost every report to isolate Information Items by checking the Information Item button. This will run a report that includes all Information Items. No Information Items will be included in reports where this button is not checked.
  • The new “Scope Summary” report lets you see Scope 1, 2 and 3 totals for each sector side-by-side.
  • We have modified Indicators, Time Series and Subsector Reports so that they only include the scope or combination of scopes you selected on the Analysis Report Options screen.
  • We’ve overhauled the Export-to-File function by:
    • Removing all zero-records from the exported sets, leaving only those records with data in them.
    • Including new fields with scope-related and biogenic CO2-related data.
    • Reducing the 12 existing Analysis module exported sets to 8 by combining each group of three (Master, Details and Transport-details) into only two (Details, Summary with Notes) export operations.
  • You can now export your notes fields in the Summary Reports.
  • Summary Exports now itemize emissions by scope.
  • We changed energy outputs in the Exports to the more common unit of million British thermal units (MMBtu) instead of gigajoules (GJ).

Updated Coefficients and Emissions Factors

  • Across the board, emission factors have been updated according to the LGO Protocol v1.1 which contains updates based on EPA’s Mandatory Reporting Rule.
  • Utility-specific electricity factors have been updated based upon additions to Version 1.1 of the LGO Protocol.
  • Customized electricity region factors from your existing version of CACP 2009 will be retained when you update your existing version of CACP 2009 to v3.0 or when you upload a backup into v3.0.
  • The User Defined Electricity Function has been removed because the factors in the table here were out of date and are not contained in the LGO Protocol.
  • Biofuel coefficients have been updated with values from the LGO Protocol.
  • We added criteria air pollutant (CAP) factors for Off Road Fuels.
  • Criteria air pollutant units now match the units for other pollutants as published in the LGO Protocol.
  • CACP 2009 v3.0 will automatically “Recalculate All” after updating your existing version or restoring from a backup.
  • New Transportation coefficient sets have been added in the government analysis module that will let you complete the LGO recommended method of calculating CO2 separately from N2O and CH4.

Bug Fixes

  • Assorted technical issues have been resolved including a bug in the Passenger Distance field at the bottom of the record screen

Important Notes on What Has Not Changed:

  • LGO Protocol solid waste and wastewater calculators are not contained in CACP 2009. You can find these calculators in the Master Data Workbook.
  • Data import function does not work for mobile sources, other fugitive or Scope 3 waste.
  • Vehicle Fleet model years still only go up to 2005 in CACP 2009 instead of 2008 from LGO Protocol v1.1.
  • eGRID and NERC electricity emission factors still need to be entered manually.
  • No new fuels have been added to CACP 2009 v3.0.
  • Fuel efficiencies were not updated for CACP 2009 v3.0.
  • Measures modules have been left largely unchanged.
