Overview

ICLEI USA has produced the draft Recycling and Composting Emissions Protocol in recognition of the contribution recycling and composting can make to greenhouse gas reduction efforts, and the high degree of influence that local governments have in this area. The Recycling and Composting protocol complements the Community Protocol by providing additional guidance on accounting for the emissions benefits of recycling and composting activities in a community. A draft of the protocol is available for public comment April 8 through April 29, 2013.

This webinar will provide an overview of what the protocol covers, how it is organized, and how emissions and emissions reductions from recycling and composting are treated. There will be significant time to answer your questions.

Event Overview

Many of the challenges facing the United States today are a complex mix of environmental and economic factors. The nature of these challenges means that they are often too large or expensive for a single company or government agency to solve. But each sector brings strengths and capabilities that can be combined to create practical solutions. Public-private partnerships are a crucial catalyst for creating sustainable solutions that balance economic and environmental progress. By connecting businesses with government and NGO leaders, these partnerships can drive progess at a local, regional, and national level.

Companies are developing a wide array of tools, technologies, products, and services to create new markets and solve environmental problems. Cities across the country are implementing bold new visions to secure their ecological and economic futures.

BCLC's Bricks & Sticks Sustainability Symposium is designed to showcase outstanding examples of public-private partnerships making a difference today and help attendees make the connections necessary to create partnerships for the future. If you are working at the nexus of economic and environmental issues in the private sector, public sector, or non-government sectors, this event is for you. Let's work together to create and implement "win-win" solutions.

The symposium will feature businesses and sessions covering:
• CSR and the Future of Energy
• Building Public-Private Partnerships to Advance Communities
• Lessons from Leading Communities
• Breakouts: Geographic Challenges Facing Sustainabile Systems
• Business’ Role in the 21st Century
• Breakouts: Current Situation and Needs in Sectors
• Resiliency Session

Attendees will also learn how EPA’s energy performance score compares peer facilities across the country, and how to take advantage of national recognition opportunities for top-performing buildings.

Investigations by NREL and others have illuminated the high cost and complexity of solar financing. There are many factors behind this and many possible solutions. Taking a page from other financing areas, NREL is leading a national effort through their SAPC program to streamline finance through standardization of transaction documents and contracts. NREL has assembled an impressive working group of leaders in the solar industry experienced in various contract instruments. To date, progress is being made and this webinar is a great opportunity to learn more about this work. The webcast will explore the complexities of solar financing in residential and commercial markets; what opportunities are there for streamlining, and/or developing more effective methods; and how can the broader industry support these efforts?

This day-long symposium will focus on large-scale commercial, institutional and educational projects. We will look at how cities and regions can implement Net Zero strategies and discuss what the impediments (and incentives) are for doing so now.

Our lineup of speakers currently includes:

Alex Steffen to keynote the day's presentations. Alex's new book, 'Carbon Zero,' sees Passive House as a viable means to achieve our carbon emissions goals.

Joke Dockx (pronounced 'Yokey Docs') from the City of Brussels' Institute for the Environment. Ms. Dockx has supervised the transformation/conversion of over 102,000 m2 of buildings to super-low energy standard construction within the City of Brussels. An additional 44 Passive House buildings are under construction. The City has mandated that all new buildings must meet the Passive House standard by 2015 and is on track to have most of the existing municipal buildings retrofitted to meet that requirement.

Mary James: former Home Energy Magazine editor, has written her third book on Passive House buildings in the US, "American Passive House Developments." The book is focussed on multi-family, commercial and multi-purpose projects already completed around the country.
