International Day of Climate Action (Manhattan Beach)
Join City of Manhattan Beach and Be Part of a Global Movement on Oct 24
On Saturday, October 24th, make this the year you take action against climate change. Join the South Bay Climate Action Group in a fun, family-friendly event to promote the number 350--the most important number you need to know.
350
parts per million is the upper limit of carbon dioxide that leading
science tells us we should have in the atmosphere. Currently our planet
is at nearly 390 ppm, more CO2 than seen at any other time in recorded
history. For the past year the 350 organization has worked to gather public and political support for a global climate treaty committing to reach 350 ppm.
Over
1500 communities in more than 110 countries have commited to take
action against climate change, and show their support for the 350
organization. Manhattan Beach is proud to have been chosen as the site
for the South Bay's 350 event.
Join your local elected
officials, over 20 nonprofit groups, and your friends and neighbors in
lining up to "do the wave" and form a human tide line to highlight the
impacts climate change will have on sea level rise and our unique
coastal community.
The
event is schedule from 3:00 to 4:00 PM, with a short rally starting at
3:00 PM. Volunteers will be asked to begin lining up at 3:30 PM, and at
3:50 PM we will collectively throw up our arms, and do the wave for ten
minutes. Following the event is a beach cleanup, sponsored by Heal the Bay.
The
goal of this event is to create a stunning visual image along our
iconic coastline and share these images, along with thousands of
others, with global leaders at the UN climate conference in Copenhagen
this December.
Come be part of this historic movement on Saturday, October 24th, and celebrate the International Day of Climate Action. To RSVP, or for more information, please visit the South Bay CAG website. If you have any questions, please contact the City's Environmental Programs Manager, Sona Kalapura.
