City of Palm Springs' Your Sustainable City Celebration

Oct, 19 –24th , PSDS Fall Clean-up Event
Each Fall Palm Springs Disposal Services (PSDS) provides residents the opportunity to dispose of unwanted trash and debris. Customers who have bulky waste, including electronic waste, are asked to set out at the curb by 7:00 A.M., Monday, October 19th. There is a two-item limit per household for large bulky waste. Customers who have additional waste can transport it on Saturday, October 24th to the parking lot behind City Hall. Large roll-off boxes will be located at the North side parking lot of City Hall for a limited time on Saturday from 8:00 A.M. to 2:00 P.M. PSDS personnel will be available to assist all individuals in offloading their debris and to ensure that no hazardous waste or toxic waste is discarded in these containers. Access to the public site will be permitted from Civic Drive where vehicles will be directed to exit onto El Cielo Road. All of these services are provided at no additional charge. National Parks Conservation Association’s Climate Change Speaker Series: “Plants, Pollinators, & Weather: Are Desert Plants Moving North?” Learn how climate change may affect the natural cycle of plants and pollinators in our desert and in Joshua Tree National Park. Wed. Oct. 21st, 5:30 pm, Get Plugged In! at the Electric Vehicle Rally and Fair,
City Hall, 3200 E. Tahquitz Canyon Way
Come check out a Mini E, Rav4 EV, Miles Electric Utility truck and other electric vehicles at City Hall. A “Plug in Partners” resolution in support of the electric vehicle market will be proposed to City Council. Members of the California Electric Vehicle Association will be on hand to answer questions about new electric vehicles (EV’s), conversions and why electric vehicles are an important consideration in the alternative transportation portfolio of any City. It’s electric!


Thursday, Oct. 22, 6 pm, “Your Sustainable City” Celebration at Village Fest
Downtown. E. Palm Canyon Way
Visit downtown Palm Springs to check out an electric car, learn about the “Your Sustainable City” program a. The first 100 to sign the energy star pledge to get an energy efficient light bulb and the first 1000 visitors to our booth will receive a free water aerator that will conserve water and save on your residential water billing. Our sponsor Renova Energy and Solar will display solar energy options, give away LED pocket lights and raffle off a 14” Sola-Tube ® with installation. You won’t want to miss this fun event and great opportunity to learn about energy efficient products. You will also have an opportunity to meet members of the City’s “Green Team” and your Sustainability Commission.

Friday, Oct. 23, 10:15 am, KIDS Meet the Mayor!
Cielo Vista Elementary and St. Theresa’s Elementary
The Mayor, City Council and the City’s Office of Sustainability visit a local schools to promote energy and water conservation. Children will be given water conservation materials from Desert Water Agency and will also receive Energy Star activity books, learn energy saving fun facts, and go home as members of our newest Office of Sustainability ambassadors. Each child will be asked to become an Energy Star Partner with the City of Palm Springs and will sign on to the Energy Star Pledge poster!

Saturday, Oct. 24, 6:30 pm, KEYNOTE Speaker Eric Corey Freed will help kick-off the ‘YOUR SUSTAINABLE CITY’ Program.
Followed by a showing of the documentary “Planet in Peril” @ Ace Hotel & Swim Club, 701 E. Palm Canyon, Drive Our keynote speaker Eric Corey Freed was named
“Best Green Architect" by San Francisco Magazine as part of the Magazine's annual ‘Best Of’ Issue (July 2005) and is the author of “Green Your Home for Dummies”, (John Wiley & Sons, 2008). Hear from Eric regarding sustainable design and learn how every home can take steps towards being a green home. After join us for a celebration and kick-off of the “YOUR SUSTAINABLE CITY” program. We’ll mingle, chat and watch “Planet in Peril”. In this cutting edge documentary CNN's Anderson Cooper, Sanjay Gupta & Animal Planet's Jeff Corwin investigate the current state of our planet, focusing on four major areas: global warming, overpopulation, deforestation and species loss.
