Milestone Progress in the Northeast & Mid-Atlantic
by Don Knapp
ICLEI member local governments across the country are making headway in their individual efforts to measure and reduce greenhouse gas emissions and energy consumption. Completing a greenhouse gas emissions inventory is no small feat, nor are setting emissions reduction targets or creating a climate action plan. That's why ICLEI extends a huge round of congratulations to these members in the Northeast/Mid-Atlantic Region that have recently achieved various milestones in ICLEI's Five Milestones for Climate Mitigation Process.
- Baltimore, MD, Milestone One and Two: Baltimore completed both its government operations and community GHG emissions inventories in late 2009. The city also included its GHG emissions reduction target in its updated sustainability plan.
- Richmond, VA, Milestone One and Two: With assistance from ICLEI, Richmond completed its government operations and community GHG emissions inventories in late 2009. ICLEI also worked with 2rw Consultants and SL King to assist the City in developing its EECS to DOE for stimulus funding.
- Dobbs Ferry, NY, Milestone One
- Cranberry Township, PA, Milestone One, Two, and Three
- Red Hook, NY, Milestone One
- Worcester, MA, Milestone Two and Three
- Fayetteville, WV, Milestone One
Should you be on this list as well? If you've recently completed an inventory, set targets, or released a climate action plan, let us know! We want to broadcast your achievement across the ICLEI Network.
What is ICLEI's Five Milestones process? A little refresher:
- Milestone One: Conduct a baseline emissions inventory and forecast
- Milestone Two: Adopt an emissions reduction target for the forecast year
- Milestone Three: Develop a local climate action plan
- Milestone Four: Implement policies and measures
- Milestone Five: Monitor and verify results
