ICLEI Building Clean and Efficient Cities in India

by Emma Timboy-Pickering Sep 19, 2011

Urban Climate Project screen-shot

View a 10-minute summary of a three-year undertaking, the Urban Climate Project: Building Clean and Efficient Cities (UCP). This short documentary highlights the actions developed by a joint initiative of ICLEI, the National Institute of Urban Affairs (NIUA) and the U.S. Department of State: Asia Pacific Partnership.

Through the UCP, ICLEI assisted two Indian cities, Rajkot and Coimbatore, to implement green and energy-efficient infrastructure projects and pilot demonstrations. The UCP process involved measuring the greenhouse gas emissions from the two cities, and then working with the cities to help implement projects and pilot demonstrations. The two cities are now serving as models in a replicate process for over 60 other cities in India as well as cities throughout the developing world.

Tune In for 24 Hours of Climate Reality

by Emma Timboy-Pickering Sep 12, 2011

24 hours of climate reality video screengrab

ICLEI USA is on board as a partner in the Climate Reality Project. Are you? On Wednesday at  7 p.m. in your time zone, go to for a live broadcast that reveals the truth about the climate crisis and inspires a new wave of action. As anti-science activists (and politicians) spread myths and misconceptions about climate change, isn't a dose of reality exactly what we need?

We like how the Climate Reality people describe how the next 24 hours will unfold:

24 Presenters. 24 Time Zones. 13 Languages. 1 Message. 24 Hours of Reality is a worldwide event to broadcast the reality of the climate crisis. It will consist of a new multimedia presentation created by Al Gore and delivered once per hour for 24 hours, representing every time zone around the globe. Each hour people living with the reality of climate change will connect the dots between recent extreme weather events — including floods, droughts and storms — and the manmade pollution that is changing our climate. We will offer a round-the-clock, round-the-globe snapshot of the climate crisis in real time. The deniers may have millions of dollars to spend, but we have a powerful advantage. We have reality.

EPA sustainable transportation guide thumbEPA's Office of Sustainable Communities has published a Guide to Sustainable Transportation Performance Measures. The guide describes opportunities for transportation agencies to incorporate environmental, economic, and social sustainability into decision-making through the use of performance measures. Performance measures allow decision-makers to quickly observe the effects of a proposed transportation plan or project, or to monitor trends in transportation system performance over time.

The guide describes 12 performance measures that can readily be used in transportation decision-making, and for each, it presents possible metrics, summarizes analytical methods and data sources, and illustrates its use by one or more transportation agencies.

Based on lessons learned from an interagency pilot project on Cape Cod, Massachusetts, the U.S. Department of Transportation’s John A. Volpe National Transportation Systems Center has developed a guidebook for integrating climate change into transportation and land-use scenario planning. Through a process of data collection and scenario development, the pilot project resulted in a multi-agency transportation and land use development scenario for Cape Cod, with a focus on reducing future greenhouse gas emissions and considering the potential impacts of sea-level rise on the region.
