Across the country, ICLEI is leading efforts to help local governments plan for and adapt to climate change. Read on for brief updates on our key regional events.

San Diego Adaptation Planning Update

On Aug. 2, ICLEI kicked off an adaptation planning process for addressing sea level rise in San Diego Bay. A Steering Committee comprised of four coastal cities and the Port of San Diego convened to map out the project, which will result in the development of a San Diego Bay Sea Level Rise Adaptation Strategy.

ICLEI is now initiating the stakeholder engagement process, with plans for a full-day workshop for stakeholders in early November to be developed in partnership with NOAA.  ICLEI is also working with scientists at Scripps Institute of Oceanography to evaluate sea level rise scenarios and inundation mapping. The San Diego coastal resilience initiative is supported by the San Diego Foundation, which has emerged as a regional leader in efforts to prepare for climate change impacts.

National Adaptation Strategy Update

You may already be aware that the Council on Environmental Quality is working to produce recommendations for President Obama on what a national adaptation strategy should look like.

In March, CEQ's Climate Change Adaptation Task Force released an Interim Progress Report, and in October will report to the President on the development of domestic and international dimensions of a U.S. approach, and what federal agencies are doing to support it. The Task Force also will recommend additional aspects to consider in the development of a comprehensive national strategy. ICLEI will keep you posted as new information is released.
