Long Island is the longest, largest island in the contiguous United States and is home to 2.8 million residents, making it one of the most populated island in any U.S. state.
So what is the carbon footprint of such a large, densely populated area? In August 2008, ICLEI launched the Long Island Carbon Footprint Project to find out. With support from the Rauch Foundation, ICLEI worked with key local stakeholders to develop a comprehensive regional greenhouse gas emissions inventory for Long Island, which will serve as a tool to drive and support the climate protection activities that have already begun in the region. With its expertise in local climate protection analysis, ICLEI established a regional framework to help all Long Island local governments be engaged and empowered to take individual action.
