HUD, DOT and EPA are partnering to help U.S. communities become more sustainable.
Local governments have an opportunity to work with these agencies to shape sustainability policies.
The inter-agency partnership has defined six Livability Principles:
1. Provide more transportation choices
2. Promote equitable, affordable housing
3. Enhance economic competitiveness
4. Support existing communities
5. Coordinate policies and leverage investment
6. Value communities and neighborhoods
HUD is taking the lead in funding, evaluating, and supporting integrative regional planning for sustainable development.
DOT will focus on: 1) capacity building within transportation agencies for sustainable development planning and investments; 2) investing in transportation infrastructure that will support sustainable development and the six Livability Principles.
EPA will enhance its role as provider of technical assistance and developer of environmental sustainability metrics and practices.
